After an uninspiring eighteen hour drive from Kalamazoo, I arrived in Highlands Ranch, a suburb twenty minutes south of downtown Denver. The mountains are in view to the West - I'm told these are the foothills. Treated with high generosity from he, and his Mom (and the rest of the family).
Tuesday was Matt's day off, and we visited Red Rocks Park - an area just inside the foothills of the Rockies that has striking bare, reddish outcroppings angling toward the sky like a ship sinking into the sea. On the surface there are many swirls and patterns, and rounded edges that give the appearance of smooth rock. But, of course the rock is coarse, sandstone. An easy walk on a very nice trail takes you around a good majority of the rocks in about an hour.
